"man sail is a picture book of a son and his father bringing the son's new acquisition, a wrung-out and very tired 34' Tartan Sloop from Cambridge Maryland to Ft. Lauderdale in December 2011. Their route took them down the Chesapeake and into the ICW at Norfolk. The down the Dismal Swamp canal (the one George Washington cut his surveying skills on.
There were no significant problems save the bilge flooding twice within the first hour of departing Cambridge . . "QUICK, STEER FOR SHORE!!!" But fortunately the leak was traced to first; a back-siphon from the bilge pump, and later to a failing joker valve in the marine head . . . just the usual . . . followed days later by the fuel pump failing during the run through the last three bridges in Ft. Lauderdale-at night!
There was some sailing outside for a couple of day & nights off Hatteras and lots of gray, dreary days, but hey! We were sailing, seeing new and old sights, telling stories, bonding and roughing it together, what could be better?
